I'm Caeli - a lifestyle family, newborn and portrait photographer based in Wayland, MA.
My goal is to create images that help you celebrate and cherish the joy and connectedness of your family.
One of the most common questions parents ask before booking a Personality Portrait session is: what is the best age for personality portraits of kids? It is a thoughtful question, and it usually comes from a place of wanting to time things just right.
The truth, though, is that there is not one perfect age.
Children change constantly, and each stage reveals something different about who they are becoming. Personality Portraits are not about capturing a milestone as much as they are about preserving your child’s personality as it exists right now. Whether your child is a curious baby, an expressive preschooler, or a thoughtful teenager, each age offers something meaningful and worth remembering. Parents searching for the best age for personality portraits are often surprised to learn that every stage of childhood brings something unique to the camera.
Personality Portraits are photographed in my simple studio space in Wayland, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston, where the focus stays entirely on your child’s expression and personality without distractions.
Babies can absolutely be photographed for Personality Portraits as well!
The ideal time is usually around six months, when babies can sit independently. At this stage they are expressive, curious, and full of personality. Sitting also gives them the freedom to move naturally without needing support.
That said, babies can be photographed earlier than that as well. Younger babies often photograph beautifully during tummy time, when they are lifting their heads and interacting with the world around them.
These images often become a beautiful companion to newborn photographs.

Toddlers bring a completely different kind of energy!
At this age, personality is beginning to burst through in big ways. Some toddlers are curious and observant, while others are expressive and full of movement.
Parents sometimes worry that toddlers will not sit still long enough for a portrait. In reality, that unpredictability is often what makes the images so special. Serious looks, shy glances, and curious expressions often tell the story of this age far better than a practiced smile ever could. Honestly, toddler galleries are often some of my favorites because the range of expressions and personality can be huge in just a few minutes.

For many families, this is a particularly fun age for Personality Portraits.Preschoolers are expressive, imaginative, and increasingly confident in front of the camera. They are also old enough to engage in conversation and play, which often leads to wonderfully genuine expressions.
In my experience, this is often the age when kids are most comfortable simply being themselves.

As children grow, their expressions and personalities become more nuanced.
At this age, you often start to see a new layer of personality emerge. Some kids become more confident and expressive, while others grow a little more thoughtful or self-aware in front of the camera. Personality Portraits during these years often capture a fascinating mix of confidence, curiosity, and growing independence.
Many families begin making Personality Portraits an annual tradition during these years, creating a visual timeline of how their child grows and changes.

Older kids and teens can create some of the most striking Personality Portraits.
As children enter the tween and teenage years, their confidence and individuality become more defined. Expressions may be quieter, more thoughtful, or more self-assured.
These portraits often feel more reflective and personal. Many parents love having portraits of their children at this stage before they move into the next chapter of life.
While you are no longer seeing the same rapid growth you did during the toddler years, there is still a lot changing from year to year during this stage. It often happens slowly enough that you may not notice it day to day. But when you look back at these portraits later, you can see the extra inches of height, the way their features begin to settle, and the quiet confidence that starts to emerge.

Childhood rarely announces when it is about to change. One day your child is full of toddler curiosity, and before you know it they are confident elementary schoolers or thoughtful teenagers preparing for the next chapter of their lives.
Personality Portraits allow families to preserve these versions of their children before they quietly change again.
Families travel from Wayland, Wellesley, Newton, and across the greater Boston area to create these portraits each year, documenting their children as they grow and evolve.
There is no perfect age for Personality Portraits. The best age is simply the age your child is right now.

If you would like to capture your child’s personality as it exists in this moment, Personality Portrait sessions take place throughout the year in my Wayland studio. Many families choose to photograph each of their children every year, creating a growing collection of portraits that becomes a visual timeline of their childhood.
