The Photography Blog
Whether this is your first time navigating the school photo world or you’re a seasoned pro, figuring out what to dress your child in can feel like one more thing on the never-ending list of to-dos. But don’t worry, with a little planning, school photo day can go smoothly—and I’m here to help!
The school year is in full swing, and I don’t know about you, but I feel like I’m just now catching my breath! Between after-school activities, packing lunch and snacks (so many snacks), and the daily scramble to get out the door and not miss the bus, things can feel a little chaotic. Amidst all the hustle and bustle, we can’t forget, school photo day is sneaking up on us!
The most important thing to remember is school photos are meant to capture your child as they truly are. There is no need for a complete wardrobe overhaul or anything too fancy. Keeping things simple and timeless ensures the focus stays on your child’s face (and their personality!) rather than their clothing. Here are a few tips on what works best:
You can’t go wrong with solid colors when it comes to school photos. They keep things clean and simple, allowing your child’s face to be the focus of the photograph. Choose between soft pastels, warm neutrals, or even a bold gem tone. Solid colors keep the focus where it should be — your child’s expression.
Textures add depth and visual interest while still keeping things simple and classic, exactly what you want in a school photo. Examples are sweaters with a nice knit, waffle or ribbed fabrics, or a soft eyelet. Textured clothing photographs beautifully and adds dimension to the final portrait.
Clothing with small prints are another great option to add a little something to your child’s outfit. Think subtle floral patterns, thin stripes, or tiny polka dots. The key here is keeping the print small and understated so it doesn’t compete with your child’s face. Large, busy patterns can be distracting, but a well-chosen small print can add a little personality and fun to the outfit.
While I am all for kids being able to express themselves through clothing that reflects their personality, there are a few things you’ll want to do your best to avoid to make sure your photos turn out beautifully.
Neon is having its moment and is a favorite for many! However, when it comes to photos, the bright, fluorescent hues reflect light and color onto your child’s face that can not be corrected in editing. If that isn’t enough of a reason to leave the neon at home on photo day, neon colors tend to draw attention and distract from your child’s features, making them the star of the photo for all the wrong reasons. Stick to softer tones that compliment your child’s skin tone.
Large patterns and busy prints can overpower a photo. This makes it difficult for the viewer to focus on your child’s expression. Whether it’s big florals, bold geometric shapes, or over-the-top graphics, these elements tend to draw attention away from the most important part of the photo – your child. If you really do want a pattern, remember: smaller is better.
Clothing with big logos or text is another easy pitfall to avoid. Catch phrases, sports teams or large logos can feel dated and, again, draw attention away from your child’s face.
I love a good hoodie! They are comfy, cozy and I don’t blame your child, or mine, for loving them so much! Unfortunately, in photos, hoodies tend to bulk up around the neck and face, making it harder to see those precious smiles and expressions. On photo day, either swap for cozy sweater or simple zip-up that won’t overwhelm the photo.
At the end of the day, comfort is key. If your child is uncomfortable or doesn’t feel like themselves in their outfit, it will show in the photos. Let them have a say in what they wear, offer a few choices, and make sure they feel good in their clothes. After all, the best photos are the ones where your child feels relaxed, happy, and confident!
